Martyrology

Sunday, September 25, 2022 29 Elul 5782

2:45 PM - 3:15 PM

The traditional Yom Kippur service includes a section known as Eleh Ezkerah, a medieval poem detailing the public execution of ten leading rabbis by the Roman Emperor Hadrian in the period following the destruction of the Second Temple. In distinction to the Yizkor service, which commemorates personal loss, the Martyrology service acknowledges communal and societal loss. In recent years, contemporary Eleh Ezkerah services, such as the one included in the Reconstructionist machzor, have memorialized the victims of Crusades, Inquisitions, pogroms, and the Shoah. In addition to invoking these horrors, our service will reflect the layers of loss and grief that we have experienced communally and societally during the past years.
